James E. Wood Jr., MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, serves as Chairman of MedStar Harbor Hospital's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, focusing on total joint replacement. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Morgan State University and graduated Doctor of Medicine with high honors from the University of California, Irvine in 1973. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Wood was a sports medicine fellow with the Robert K. Kerlan / Frank Jobe Orthopedic Group, team physicians for the Los Angeles Lakers, Dodgers, Angels, Rams and Kings. He also completed an orthopedic traumatology fellowship at San Francisco General Hospital.
Dr. Wood’s extracurricular interests include serving as a founding steering committee member of the Movement is Life Initiative, which works to foster health care cultural competence, diversity and shared decision-making. He also serves on the Parks and People Foundation Board in Baltimore, providing recreational opportunities to Baltimore youth, while also addressing watershed and green space concerns.
Dr. Wood has been married for 35 years to Robin Williams Wood who is a 1977 graduate of the University of California, Irvine. The couple has four adult children. Dr. Wood enjoys golf, tennis, and several outdoor activities in his spare time.
