UCI Rallies Around Volunteerism to Celebrate 50th
Anteater Spirit Rally kicks off two-year effort to rack up 50,000 service hours.

"When this campus was dedicated 50 years ago, the vision was to create one of America's great research universities," Chancellor Gillman said. "Those original founding faculty and students -- they dreamed big. They decided that they were going to do great things not by copying their way to the top, but by embracing new ways of thinking. We are their heirs to that great and good project and we stand here today as stewards of a noble mission to be a force in human enlightenment and social progress."

The UCI Fifty for 50 Volunteer program encourages the UCI community to personally donate 50 hours of service hours of time and talent over the two-year anniversary period.

Jennifer Friend '95 Gives Back to the UCI Community

UCI social science alumna, Jennifer Friend '95, is ending homelessness, one child at a time. As CEO of the non-profit organization, Project Hope Alliance, she seeks to end the cycle of homelessness by moving families out of motels and shelters into affordable homes, and by providing children a proper education for brighter futures.

With the support of UCI,
Project Hope Alliance has been able to create an awareness of Orange County homelessness. In coordination with the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, the reality of homeless living among working poor families was made visible through the creation an imersive art piece, 214 sq.ft. The Department of Psychology & Law has helped strenghten its data to effectively serve those in need. Also, the Paul Merage School of Business and Center for Wealth and Investment Management has created a new Financial Literacy Summer Residential Program for 8th and 9th grade students.

Over the past 25 years, Project Hope Alliance has served thousands of children in the Orange County area.
